Review: Bambu Jungle Kitchen at Volcano Bay

When it comes to eating at Volcano Bay, you’re almost always going to have to make a difficult decision. Luckily, it’s not because there is a lack of decent dining options. Volcano Bay has four different restaurants – The Feasting Frog, Kohola Reef, Whakawaiwai Eats, and Bambu. We decided to give Bambu a shot in our latest dining review.

The menu at Bambu Jungle Kitchen is by no means adventurous. Here you’ll find somewhat routine items like an Island Bacon Cheeseburger, Chicken Tenders, and the Karika Chicken Sandwich. Two items in particular that sounded very appetizing were the Waturi Mahi Sandwich (grilled mahi mahi, pineapple salsa, signature remoulade, lettuce and tomato on a toasted brioche bun with fries) and the Bambu Burger (cheddar cheese, fresh slaw, fried onion crisps, and avocado mayo on a Hawaiian style bun with fries), and we will surely be back in the future to try those out. However, this time around we went with the Belly Burger and the Quinoa Edamame Burger.

Belly Burger

Priced at $14.99 the Belly Burger is described as: Schezuan-glazed pork belly and caramelized onions topped with fresh cucumber mango basil slaw, lettuce, and tomato with fries. We substituted the fries for a side of chips.

Considering the toppings, this burger could pass as a gourmet burger at most restaurants, but unfortunately, the quality didn’t quite match the description. The biggest offender in this dish was the burger itself. The patty was definitely of a higher caliber than the standard theme park burger, which was evident in its thickness, but the burger was cooked very well done. It wasn’t burnt at all, but the meat was very tough in portions and threw off the balance of the sandwich.

Some bites from the Belly Burger provided a great balance between the sweetness of the cucumber mango basil slaw and the saltiness from the pork belly, but for the most part, the flavors were all lost and the patty dominated the flavor of the sandwich. The chips were light, crispy, and generally unoffensive.

Quinoa Edamame Burger

Priced at $13.49 the Quinoa Edamame Burger is described as: topped with roasted shiitake mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and sriracha mayo with fries.

We usually try out vegetarian burgers when at all possible, so this was a must-do for us despite the fact that you can also find this at Kohola Reef. As far as vegetarian options go, this is one of the better ones we have found inside a theme park or water park in Orlando. The Quoina Edamame patty was perfectly fried, providing a crisp-not-burnt shell with a soft, well-seasoned interior.

The sriracha mayo added a bit extra heat to the sandwich, which already had a hint of spiciness, so those who avoid spicy foods may want to stay away from this option. The roasted shiitake mushrooms were the icing on the cake for this burger and added an extra burst of flavor to the entire sandwich. The fries served with this meal were better than your average theme park fries, but still nothing to write home about.

Bambu may not have the flashiest menu at Volcano Bay, but there are definitely a few options on there for every type of eater. Our final thoughts on the two items were very clear – the Quinoa Edamame Burger is a must-try option and one that we would get again, whereas the Belly Burger had a lot of promise, but it doesn’t deliver. Maybe the Belly Burger would’ve been better had it been cooked medium instead of well done, but the other ingredients on the burger couldn’t save it and that’s saying a lot. Regardless, we’ll be back in the future to try out some of the other menu items at Bambu Jungle Kitchen!
